Internal Window Shutter Styles
Internal window shutters with adjustable louvres probably offer more flexibility in terms of light, privacy and security than any other UK window dressing solution. A selection of choices is available in the design.
Examples of Shutter Styles
Cafe style internal louvre shutters add a continental touch to your windows. Covering only the bottom section, they permit full daylight to enter through the top of the window giving light and privacy simultaneously.
Full Height style louvre and solid shutters cover the window or opening from top to bottom. They can be custom made with a mid-rail (optional below 1.3m) which can be placed to match existing window divides. This gives moveable louver sections above and below the mid-rail which can be operated independently.
Tier on Tier style internal shutters allow the top tier to be opened independently from the bottom tier (like a stable door). Very popular in houses throughout London, this option allows light to enter through the top of the window leaving the bottom closed for privacy if necessary. Only interior window shutters allow this flexibility which is not possible with nets, curtains or blinds. For the Dorchester range, Tier on Tier style is used only for bi-folding smaller shutters.
Top Tracking is used to mount full height plantation shutters for wider openings (over 2.2m) where the interior shutters would be too heavy to hinge off side battens or frames. Top Tracking looks superb as a room divider or partition.
Special Shapes can sometimes be the only solution to shaped windows. They include arches, fan tops, circles, hexagons, octagons, triangles etc. Special shaped are only available in wooden shutters and are more expensive than standard rectangular window shutters as they need to be templated and hand made. They take longer to manufacture than standard shutters so require a lead time of 8 - 10 weeks.
For Special shapes pricing, look at our online shutter quote at the top right of the page, enter dimensions for a standard window, add about £350 and this will give you a fairly accurate estimate.
Internal Louvre Shutters
When making your louvre choice, consider the size of the window and the desired effect. Custom window louvers are available in 32, 47, 64 and 89mm slat sizes. Generally larger windows require larger louvre sizes. With larger custom louvres, the interior of a room receives more light but less privacy from the outside.

Louvre Dimensions
NB: 32mm is only available in the Wellington wood shutters range.
In the USA, most wood plantation shutters or window shades are made with 89mm (3.5") louvres or larger, but interior window shutters in the UK tend to be manufactured in smaller louvres such as 32mm, 47mm or 64mm.
Traditional Solid Panel Shutters
In Victorian times, windows were often covered with solid panel wood shutters in London and the South East and were originally made in cedar or pine. They were fitted as part of the existing window reveal boxes for security and insulation as in those days the window glass was very thin. The original pine shutters have mostly now rotted away.
Lifestyle Shutters installations are designed and made to retrofit to existing window frames rather than replace damaged solid shutters in the reveal boxes. To repair damaged original solid wooden shutters you will require a joiner rather than our services.
Solid Panel Shutter Ranges
Traditional solid wooden panel shutters are manufactured in both our Wellington (Red Cedar wood) and Taunton (Poplar wood) ranges and are made with rebated shutter panel edges as standard, now for a virtual blackout.
Solid Panel Raised Shutters are made with a 12mm MDF infill (veneered) with 27mm x 40mm vertical stiles. The MDF board will not be veneered if it is a painted colour.
Solid Panel Shaker Shutters are made with a 9mm MDF infill (veneered) with 30mm x 50mm vertical stiles. The MDF board will not be veneered if it is a painted colour.
Solid Panel Moulded Shutters are made with a 9mm MDF infill (veneered) with 30mm x 50mm vertical stiles. The MDF board will not be veneered if it is a painted colour.
Solid Panel Raised/Louvre Top Shutters are made with a 12mm MDF infill (veneered) with 27mm x 40mm vertical stiles. This consists of a solid raised base with the choice of all louvre sizes above. This option looks great in restaurants!
Commercial Shutters
Interior window shutters in commercial premises can offer a level of versatility unchallenged by any other window dressing solution. Commercial shutters will lend an air of sophistication and finesse, completely transforming the feel and character of any room. Wood interior shutters have been used on many occasions in hotel conference suites, shop fronts and restaurants as room dividers or window coverings. With solid panel base and adjustable louvre top shutters, you can elegantly separate a room whilst still leaving the impression of openness and privacy. Cafe style louvre shutters look extremely good in restaurants and will enhance any premises.
Commercial Shutters
Internal window woodgrain shutters made in the Wellington red cedar wood range, with their naturally straight and richly textured grain look fantastic in vast array of stains. They are highly suitable as a replacement to tired drape curtains in old Regency style buildings.
The Dorchester composite wood shutters are offered only as louvre shutters and are slightly more hard wearing. Covered in a thin polymer coating, these shutters are extremely durable and can be easily wiped clean of spillages or hygienically polished, making a supreme product for cafes and bars.

Lifestyle Shutters are currently in the process of investigating the fire rating for these products in new build houses and commercial premises as we believe them to be less expensive than nets and fabric curtains and so help to lower insurance costs.
